On using drugs and the government

I have talked on this before and I will again. I've tried to make sense, argued my point. But I liked how Penn Jillette puts it in his video. Its pretty much how I see things too. Both on drugs and on suicide.

The Hobbit prequel news

Richard Verrier has all the details on the decision to keep production of the prequels to Peter Jackson's Oscar-winning trilogy "The Lord of the Rings" in New Zealand: "The nation's prime minister, John Key, announced Wednesday that his government had reached an agreement with the producers of the two 'Hobbit' movies to keep the $500-million production in his country. 'I am delighted we have achieved this result,' Key said in a statement. 'Making the two 'Hobbit' movies here will not only safeguard work for thousands of New Zealanders, but it will also follow the success of the 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy in once again promoting New Zealand on the world stage.' The agreement comes after Key held talks with New Line Cinema President Toby Emmerichand other executives, who wanted assurances that the production would not be disrupted by labor unrest. They also were seeking additional financial sweeteners, which they received." LA Times Article

Kids and exercise

I read two articles by Jeanne Faulkner. They were good articles, offering helpful information about exercise related to Martial Arts ("Getting fit with Martial Arts") and children ("5 Must-Do-Sports for Kids").

I noticed two glaring and connected issues related to both articles. Interestingly enough, they both had to do with in the former, not mentioning the Martial Art of Aikido as an option, and a better option really, and not mentioning Martial Arts in the latter article.

In the children's article she opens by saying:

"Your child will survive without ever playing lacrosse, football or hockey, but kids who can't swim, bike, hike, walk or boat safely might not. They'll also miss out on a lot of summertime fun if they lack these basic sporting skills."

This is a good lead in and is true. But there are two things that eduction tends to shy away from in what is considered necessary to the proper development of a
youth: art, and protecting yourself. Another is how to live, but that is more a High School issue and I'll let that one lie for now.

She has a point about football and other sports won't save your child's life but not being able to swim, or boat, can be deadly. Hiking, walking and biking, area also good basic skills to have, although one could argue that walking just comes kind of, oh I don't know, naturally? But she's not talking about the skill of walking, rather knowing the legal and common sense rules like walking on sidewalks, using intersections, street lights, etc.

The one thing that is missing, is consideration of the school yard bully. Not the concern they once were, when one is about they will find a way to abuse those less annoying.

Just a view of where people are from who are reading this blog

Sometimes I find it interesting to review where people are from who are reading this blog. Here is a screen shot of a world map showing this.
It does change from time to time, but this is how it was for this past week. A month or so ago, I had put up some articles on North Korea and got a lot of hits. South Korea and China in fact were my highest numbers for that article.

It would seem that my blog on "Star Wackers have to be stopped - Randy Quaid" is my highest read blog ever and was exponentially more viewed that the next highest viewed article. Which I found to be unexpected. I got a lot of Canadian readers that time. But who can blame them, after all, Randy and his wife Evi, did run off to the North to seek "asylum". Good news on their dog however, as TMZ had noted on October 27th that:

"The seemingly always-on-the-run Quaids were reunited with Doji when they freed him, legally, from the shelter in Vancouver -- right after they themselves were released from an immigration holding facility. As we first reported, Doji had been locked up at the shelter -- where he could have been put to sleep -- ever since last week when his owners got busted on an outstanding warrant for a felony burglary arrest in Santa Barbara. No word if Doji's retained legal representation, but we're guessing counselor's advice would be, "Run!"

By the way, I was pleasantly surprised to find that my highest rated "Weekend Wise Words" blog, was for Ludwig Wittgenstein's Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus.

Well, that's all for now. Have a great weekend!

With ‘THE WALKING DEAD’ WRITERS GONE, WHO WILL WRITE SEASON 2?
[OKAY, the following isn't true, according to Gale Anne Herd]
With The Walking Dead absolutely killing it, in the ratings, a strange turn of events have happened. According to Deadline Hollywood Frank Darabont has released all of the writing staff for The Walking Dead, this even includes his number two, the writing executive producer Charles “Chic” Eglee. Also for the second season Frank Darabont is looking to assign scripts to freelancers instead of having a writing team. Now a change in writing staff in between season's is commonplace but to get rid of the entire writing team, is quite strange. But whatever Darabont's plans are, he has along time to think things over and decide what path to take as the second season of The Walking Dead doesn't launch until just under a year from now, in October 2011.What do you guys think? Do you trust Frank Darabont?

===
Now, a brief aside from InsideTV.EW.com:

Earlier this week, Deadline reported that Shawshank Redemption filmmaker Frank Darabont — who developed the Walking Dead for television and directed the pilot — had let go the show’s writers, including Murder One co-creator Charles “Chic” Eglee. But earlier today, Hurd refuted that allegation. “It’s completely inaccurate,” she told EW exclusively.  “[In] the writers’ room, there are people that have set up other projects that will be their first priority if their own series is picked up as a pilot or if it’s a series. I think [Eglee] just decided that he wants to run his own show.”

Hurd said the Walking Dead will probably return in October. “I think Frank and Robert [Kirkman, writer of the Walking Dead comic and an executive producer on the show] will sit down early next year, to begin mapping it out.” She also confirmed that “every one of the principal cast is signed up for multiple seasons.”

‘ZOMBIELAND 2’ SEEKING HIGH PROFILE CAMEOS?

Zombieland featured the funniest cameo of 2009, so it’s no surprise that reports are coming in that Columbia Pictures want to repeat the trick with Zombieland 2.Bloody Disgusting report that the studio are seeking out names of the calibre of Harrison Ford and Anthony Hopkins – in other words, big stars with spades of gravitas. But even as the reports went live, Zombieland writer Rhett Reese hopped onto Twitter to deny them, writing: “The Zombieland 2 rumors reported today are false.” As well as: “The Zombieland 2 rumors feel like they were the product of a game of ‘Telephone’. Distorted.”A case of double bluffing from the scribe? We hope that the writers have something a little fresher up their sleeves for the undead sequel. Many a sequel has gone the way of the Dodo by lazily repeating beats from their predecessors. On the plot front, we also hear that Zombieland 2 could feature a new lead villain, while Woody Harrelson and Jesse Eisenberg find themselves competing against a "hunky rival".

R.I.P LESLIE NIELSEN

Although known for his comedies,he did star in a few Horrors, Creepshow (1982) playing a murderer in the segment ‘Something to tide you over’ and also in Prom Night (1980). It comes with a saddened heart, that the BBC reports, veteran comic actor Leslie Nielsen has unfortunately passed away. The star of such comedy hits as Airplane! and The Naked Gun series passed away in hospital in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The star was being treated for pneumonia when he sadly passed away.Leslie Nielsen was born in the Canadian city of Regina in 1926, he got into the business in the 1950's where he started as a television actor and he performed in over 150 dramas. Nielsen then went on to star in the 1980's comedy hit Airplane! and that was start of many more comedies to come.

He went on to star in The Naked Gun series as Det. Lt. Frank Drebin and continued making people laugh all around the world, a true funny man he will be sadly missed. Leslie Nielsen appeared in well over 100 films and had a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame.

Happy anniversay to the End of Prohibition

Today marks the anniversay of the death of Prohibition. It was a test that showed that the government should simply stay out of people's personal business and what is in our blood, should remain part of what we choose to be and do as citizens of this country.

This government should have used this as a warning and punishment for stepping over the bounds of how far they should go. But instead, with the death of alcohol prohibition, they needed to find work for their agents who had families and bills and needed to make a living. And so they chose to crack down on another legal substance, cannabis.

And so, here we are in the billion dollar industry of illegal cannabis trafficking. Its interesting that they failed on alcohol, but on a softer drug, cannabis, they have been able to maintain the delusion of its dangers for this many decades. In the end, truth usually wins out, and with the advent of the internet, it won't be long before even those in government who are paid of by the drug cartels and the disinformation machine will lose out. When even medical doctors are proscribing cannabis to patients, it can't be that much longer before the government is again forced to find another way to impose on its citizenry.

I agree with Penn Jillette in that even if I refused to ever do certain things, I still do not think the government should be involved in many of the areas of people's personal lives that they currently are involved in.

"In the early twentieth century, much of the impetus for the prohibition movement in the Nordic countries and North America came from Protestant wariness of alcohol. The first half of the 20th century saw periods of prohibition of alcoholic beverages in several countries:

    * 1907 to 1948 in Prince Edward Island, but for much shorter periods in other provinces in Canada
    * 1914 to 1925 in Russia and the Soviet Union
    * 1915 to 1922 in Iceland (though beer was still prohibited until 1989)
    * 1916 to 1927 in Norway (fortified wine and beer also prohibited from 1917 to 1923)
    * 1919 in Hungary (in the Hungarian Soviet Republic, March 21 to August 1; called szesztilalom)
    * 1919 to 1932 in Finland (called kieltolaki)
    * 1920 to 1933 in the United States

"After several years, prohibition became a failure in North America and elsewhere, as bootlegging (rum-running) became widespread and organized crime took control of the distribution of alcohol. Distilleries and breweries in Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean flourished as their products were either consumed by visiting Americans or illegally imported to the U.S. Chicago became notorious as a haven for prohibition dodgers during the time known as the Roaring Twenties. Prohibition generally came to an end in the late 1920s or early 1930s in most of North America and Europe, although a few locations continued prohibition for many more years."
